Creating a PDF document in TurboCAD

10 10 2006

The most common mistake people make when trying to create a PDF file from a TurboCAD document is not having any views in paper space. So we shall go through step by step the easiest way to create a PDF file from your drawing. I am using the file Architectural from the samples folder for this example.

1) Create a View

a) Select Create View from the View menu.

Create View

b) Draw a fence around the area you would like to create a view of.

c) Name the view whatever you would like. In this case I am going to name the view Render1.

4) Changing the properties of the view. For this example I am going to change the scale and the render quality.

e) Press the save button.

You are now finished and your PDF should appear exactly as your view does in paper space.

Hi Rip,

I notice that the drawing sheet size doesn’t matter, just the objects in paperspace. I can specify a 5×3 sheet of paper, insert a Viewport that is 11×8½ and set the PDF Setup dialog for 48×36 and TC generates a PDF with a 48×36 Viewport (not 11×8½). The quality is not there though. If I make the actual Viewport 48×36, then the PDF will look terrific. Downside—humongous file size.

I’ve noticed that the viewport frame will show up on the pdf as the size of the the created viewport in paperspace even though the frame is turned off in paperspace. This has bitten me sometimes because it will cutoff leaders that are outside the viewport frame. How can that be fixed?

You could copy and paste into paper space. I would normally not recommend doing that though you will most likely run into some scaling issues. I will try and find another way around it.

Turbotech,
I have the visable box hidden, not sure why it is showing up.

Rip,
Thanks for the excellent pdf example. My need is architectural.
My paperspaces are like yours, my pertinent layers in viewports and Design Director are on, w/ background transparent, but neither pdf, nor even dwf – all 3 setups – (w/ newest autodesk viewer) will show anything but blank white (my background is white) or some misc confusion ~ http://bradenroad.com/hartnell/dwf/4.dwf ~. All I can do for now is Publish HTML. I had DWF’s working well some time ago with ACAD ‘Whip!’ and approx TCAD 6, but I’m getting a mental block or something. DWF, of course, is my real need, to grow my market. I’m extremely, extremely happy with ver 11.2 Pro. Very few hangs, usually only after multiple 3D copy/paste, etc manipulations (NOTHING is perfect). Love you people for all your expertise. This program is half my life. I don’t mean to take advantage of your blog, but if you could help . . .
Good Holiday.
Regards,
Lee

Is this method compatible with Adobe Reader 8? I’ve followed your instructions carefully, but the resulting PDF document shows just one of the four views + text on my paper space page & that one appears as a partial draft rendering–not as the full raytrace rendering I specified. Advice appreciated!

Hi,
I am getting lost at step 4. I can’t read the images on the blog. Could you provide the PDF tutorial in PDF format?

Thanks
Sean

Another solution would be to print to a PDF using a PDF print driver such as PDF995.

I’m trying to get my pdf to look like the paper space but when I save as pdf my setup button is not active. I’m trying to select “save embeded fonts”. Any ideas?
